Description |
The Royal & Derngate sits at the heart of the quarter, a merger of the Royal Theatre and the Derngate Centre in the 1980s. The town’s original Royal Theatre - a rare designation, as opposed to the more common Theatre Royal - first opened on Marefair in 1806 and has been used as a repertory playhouse since 1927. It features two auditoriums, offering an extensive programme from Broadway to Shakespeare, and is widely acknowledged as an innovative and significant regional theatre. The current Royal Theatre and Opera House in Guildhall Road opened in 1884 and was granted a royal visit by Queen Elizabeth II on its centenary in 1984. Film icon Errol Flynn spent part of his early career in Northampton, as a member of the Derngate Repertory Players, before moving onto the silver screens of Hollywood. And in 2018, Cindi Lauper’s Broadway and West End Musical ‘Kinky Boots’, adapted from the box office film of the same name, started its national tour at The Royal & Derngate for a series of sold-out performances, celebrating Northampton’s world - renowned shoe making heritage. |
