Abington Park: Abington Park Abington Park is one of the jewels in Northampton’s crown. The expansive parkland contains the ruins of the former medieval village of Abington, including a lone dovecote, archway and the 13th century Church of St Peter and St Paul, which served the village and was recorded in the Domesday Book

Beckets Park: Beckets Park and Midsummer Meadow This pleasant riverside park, with tennis courts and children’s play area, is close to the town centre and overlooks the junction of the Grand Union Canal and River Nene.

Brampton Valley Railway: This 14 mile, flat trail runs along a former railway line, through open countryside between Northampton and Market Harborough. It begins at the Boughton crossing, at the junction of Brampton Lane and the A5199 Welford Road, where there is a free carpark

Delapre Park: This 500 acre tranquil parkland includes woods, small lakes and a network of footpaths. At its centre lies the historic Depare Abbey, which is surrounded by the remains of its formal gardens; a large walled garden, a small arboretum and the unearthed gullies and ponds of a once splendid water garden

Harlestone firs: These 300 acres of pine woodland is popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Owned by the Althorp Estate for timber, public access is gained through a network of footpaths and bridleways.

Hunsbury Hill Country Park: An Iron Age Hill Fort sits at the centre of this country park, alongside a nature reserve, picnic areas and a cafe. This important archaeological site dates to between the 7th and 4th centuries BC. The internal rampart appears to have been burnt down and vitrified and such forts are rare in England.

Racecourse: The Racecourse is a large park stretching over 118 acres, with several sports pitches and play areas. It is also home to the weekly Park Run, and the Umbrella Fair Pavilion, which hosts various community groups. Large scale events take place at the park each year, including the Town Show and a free fireworks display

Upton Country Park: Upton Country Park covers more than 127 hectares of open space, stretching from Upton Mill Farm to the village of Kislingbury and includes 2.4km of paths and cycle ways, woodland and wetland. Visitors can get up close to wildlife on the may footbridges and boardwalks spanning the wetland areas
